The purpose of grading is to inform students of their academic achievement and attainment of goals. Grades are determined based on the careful consideration of all documented summative evaluations by assessing student performance against a predetermined criterion-referenced scale. In this way, grades serve as a valuable form of communication. The graded marks offer students, teachers, parents, and administrators feedback that can help shape academic goals, highlight areas of student achievement and need, improve instructional planning, and affect educational policy decisions. It is the responsibility of teachers to provide thoughtful feedback and grades that are an accurate reflection of where the student is on the path to mastery.

Choosing a system of assessment and evaluation that adequately communicates student achievement while supporting mastery learning is no small task. After researching many options, I have come to find Green and Emerson's C.O.G.S. system (see attached) to be the best answer to this compelling educational issue. Please review the rubrics I created based on C.O.G.S to evaluate two samples of student work.

This project was designed to teach us how to work collaboratively on a transition IEP. Even though all school systems have different forms, the information is the same. The result of this collaborative project includes annual transition goals and short-term objectives and benchmarks to support these goals for each domain in which the hypothetical youth is NOT performing at age or grade-level.

Schools today face a daunting number of challenges. Beyond test scores, behavior management, and academic achievement schools are forced to confront the seemingly basic issue of protecting students and teachers from the threat of serious harm. There are a number of reasons why schools have to face these challenges and a corresponding number of causes for such violent incidents. Educators must be more aware than ever of the threats that may impact them on a daily basis. Teachers in particular should be aware of the signs of bullying and be able to recognize the characteristics of bullies and their victims. They must also be prepared to confront and support an ever more diverse student population, and to be vigilant against the threats faced by these minority student groups.
