Focus on: Authentic Learning
The personality mask project described here was designed to showcase the students’ understanding of the unit on theories of personality. While the test they took on the content from this unit gave me valuable standards-based summative data for future instruction, this project lets the students access their more creative side and take charge of their own expression of learning. Planning, creating, and presenting the masks was designed to help students practice what they know and think in the affective domain. To ensure that students gave as much due to their classmates’ projects, they were asked to work on a handout to help them analyze others’ masks during the presentation time. They were also asked to complete an exit ticket where they considered what they learned about themselves in this process.
